The 2007 Club Week took place on Valentia Island in Kerry from June 23rd to 30th. Accommodations were at the Knights Haven holiday homes on the outskirts of the heaving metropolis of Knights Town on the eastern tip of the island. Most people travelled down over the weekend with a few more joining us mid-week. Weather reports for the week were not encouraging with one commentator forecasting showers, thunderstorms and longer spells of rain!!! Fortunately the forecasts were somewhat wide of the mark and the weather remained reasonably settled allowing us to dive every day around the sheltered confines of Doulus Head, Bray Head and Puffin Island. On most days the RIBs were driven the short distance from Knights Town to Portmagee on the mainland for launch.
Diving during the week was enjoyable with some excellent visibility thrown in for good measure. Early in the week, the saga of “Larry On The Ledge” provided some diversion. Larry, as he was christened, was a sheep who seemed unable to extricate himself from a ledge halfway up the cliff face near Bray Head. With little prospect of rescue and unable to contact The Samaritans, it appears Larry took his own life and was found floating in the water on Wednesday. We also lost Peter on Wednesday who departed with M1 in tow and headed for Dunlough Bay in West Cork to meet up with some English buddies.
DO duties were shared during the week with everyone agreeing that Wednesday’s diving was particularly well organised. We popped into The Bridge Bar and The Sandbar between dives while The Moorings and Fuscia restaurants were the venues for a couple of evening meals. A few hardy souls took a break from diving during the week for a day trip to the Scelligs and regretted not bringing their wet suits for the journey out and back.
