Another great dive was had in Carlingford on Sunday (21st Oct). Martello I with 10 divers was accompanied by Dundalk SAC’s two RIBs (carrying their own divers and the overflow from PSAC!!!) to no. 10 Marker Buoy near the mouth of the lough. A lovely wall dive was had by all. Wildlife including lots of lobster and shrimp was in abundance. We hit slack water at low tide so max depth was around the 16m mark.

Way back in October the busy people in Committeeland submitted an application to the department of Arts, Sports and Tourism for funding. There’s nothing unusual about that, we’ve done it every year for God knows how long. Continue reading “Sports Capital Fund (aka. Lottery Grant)” »

The maintenance sub-committee have put forward a motion to sacrifice the treasurer this Easter weekend in place of the normal trainee offering to the deities of good weather and calm seas. The move was made by some of the most influential members of the club when they discovered that the man in question works for the much abhorred “Revenue Commissioners”.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the man in question was also behind the cruel April Fool’s joke at the weekend whereby it was suggested that the club boathouse and everything in it had been destroyed by fire. The club Equipment Officer was heard to say through a flood of tears “it brought the nightmares of last year rushing back”.

We can confirm there was of course no fire at the weekend.

All,

Following on from Pat’s suggestion of a second pool night, we have a provisional Sunday night booking from 8.45pm to 9.45pm starting Sunday 18th February and continuing for 10 Sunday nights, the last session being Sunday 22nd April.

The idea of the Sunday night session is that it is very much a “family and friends” night. We will be asking anyone interested to pay 50 Euro up front. This will entitle them to attend all 10 sessions and bring along their family / friends.

Please mail me, cathalcleary(at)gmail.com, or text me (087-4181381) if interested. We will only go ahead if we get at least 10 members to pay up!

Thanks to Pat Kavanagh for the suggestion and doing the negotiations with PSLC.

Cathal.

Thanks to the members of Dundalk SAC for taking a few of us out for a dive last Sunday morning on ‘their turf’.

Both weather and diving were good, we dived a wall just south of No. 9 marker buoy in Carlingford Lough. Although not the best dive this year, it was many times better than the conditions in Dublin Bay the previous week.

Dundalk have a fantastic setup and although they have two great looking boats I still found it hard to believe the two pristine Range Rovers used to tow them were club vehicles! EO, can we get one of them!?!

I joined a visit to the NHC organised by Pat Creegan of Viking SAC on Saturday 14th October for a 50m chamber dive.

Des Quigley of the NHC gave us the full guided tour followed by the dive. If you think sounding like daffy duck after breathing in helium from a balloon is funny, you should hear yourself at 50m with a bit of nitrogen narcosis thrown in for good measure!

Des runs a fantastic facilty and asks only a €10 donation to charity for allowing divers to experience a chamber dive.

Today PSAC remembered one of it’s members who tragically lost his life two years ago by naming one of it’s Ribs in memory of him. ‘Noisy Goose’ was named in a ceremony at the slipway in Howth from which Sean started many a dive trip. After the naming ‘Noisy’ was brought out on a short trip around the harbour. Thanks to all who attended.

Report from Northside People.

I hope they had a licence!

FOUR Coolock diving enthusiasts uncovered a rare find last week when they managed to pull what they believe to be a 120-year-old anchor from the sea off Lambay Island. In a two and half hour operation, the divers, Kevin Darling, Johnny Hogan, Robert Murren and Derek Doolin, managed to slowly drag the anchor from the seabed up to Malahide Marina.
The origins of the anchor are still unclear, although the divers say they have narrowed it down to one of two possibilities.
Kevin Darling told Northside People: “We believe it is most likely from a ship called the ‘Strathtay’. If not, then there is the possibility it is from another ship known as the ‘Shamrock’.
The ‘Strathtay’ was a Scottish ship that was built in Glasgow in 1883 and sank off the north east coast, near Lambay, two years later.
“They are the only two ships that read more…….

Just back from Downings, what a week, brilliant weather, amazing diving and great fun was had by all. Basking sharks, wrecks, loads of life, 100m gullies, two boats in top form, rasher sandwiches and rabbits, what more could you ask for? Plenty of pictures and a report here. Thanks to all who made it  a great week.

Just back from the delights of Achill, it was hard to become enthused about diving in Dublin again. However a group of us braved the tempest last Sunday and dived in the shelter of Howth Head at Balscadden. Despite the run(why do we always seem to dive Balscadden on Springs?) everyone had a great time. The vis was surprisingly good despite the winds of the last few days, and the Sun Shone, even underwater.

I dived with Gillian and Gyvsie and, for the first time ever, saw a bird underwater. It was a guillemot(not a penguin as John and I both thought!!) and it swam around us for a few seconds before heading back to the surface. Amazing sight and one I’ve always wanted to see.

On their dive, John Broderick and Mark had not only to contend with John’s new drysuit(ooooh fancy!)but they were scared stiff by the beast that lurks under the concrete plinth on Gull rock! Apparently the biggest lobster in creation lives there. We are planning an expedition in the near future to investigate and corroborate their story.

Thanks to Les and Gyvsie for planning the dive and Peter and Les for towing and to everyone who was there for the craic.

Marie.

On Saturday in Achill on the June Bank Holiday Weekend a few of us got the opportunity to swim with a Basking Shark, picture above. The sighting of which along with two others and a school of Risso’s dolphins we reported to the IWDG. Thanks John G for the picture.
